Ashikaga Government (jan 1, 1336 – jan 1, 1573)

Description:

In 1333, the Ashikaga family, a rival samurai family, overthrew the Kamakura shogunate and took power in Japan. However, unlike the Kamakura administration, the Ashikaga shogunate was unable to exert as much authority over the numerous provinces and returned the capital to Kyôto. Daimyô (provincial barons) governed the populace in the nearby countryside, and they frequently engaged in conflict over territorial claims. The daimyô endeavoured to impose military dominance on every aspect of life by constructing bureaucratic administrations in each province. Local administration was more established than previously, but the shôgun's central authority was ineffective.
