The Black Lives Matter movement began in July of 2013 when Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi created the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter after George Zimmerman, killer of Black teen Trayvon Martin, was acquitted. It led to multiple mass protests across the United States over the years, growing widely the next year after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
