Description:
- British troops from New York and Georgia sailed to Charleston, SC to begin a siege on the city
- British General in charge- Henry Clinton
- American General in charge- Benjamin Lincoln
- 12,847 British Troops faced off with 6,577 American Troops
- After months of bombardment and laying siege to Charleston, the American troops finally surrendered to the British on May 12, 1780 marking the end of the siege
- Result - British Victory
- 5,506 American troops casualties compared to 258 British troops
Sequence of Events:
- December 1799- The British start amassing troops to sail to Charleston
- March 1780- British troops reach Charleston and start the siege
- April 21, 1780- Benjamin Lincoln, commander of the Continental forces offers to surrender the city if the British let his men leave peacefully; his proposal is rejected
- May 8, 1780- British gain so much ground that their army stands only a few yards from the Continental forces
- May 12, 1780- Lincoln surrenders the city and his troops to the British as their is no hope remaining for victory
