Domestic Affairs (jan 1, 1775 – jan 1, 1795)
Description:
How They Paid For It:
The patriots had to come up with massive sums of money to pay for the revolutionary war. To do this, they printed lots of extra money, which hyperinflated the economy. They also took massive loans from France to help fund the war.
Living Conditions:
Soldiers had a poor diet, worn out clothes, damp shelters, and lived in unsanitary conditions. Diseases such as smallpox and typhus killed many soldiers. Hospitals were not very good at the time, so a lot of these soldiers died of these diseases.
What Parts Civilians Played:
Women and girls took part in the war by caring for the soldiers. They cooked for them and sewed their uniforms as well as acting as nurses, taking care of the wounded. A few women, called Molly Pitchers, even took part in the fighting.
