The Reformatory Era (jan 1, 1876 – jan 1, 1890)
Description:
Had a rehabilitation philosophy. The Reformatory Era was innovated by Captain Alexander Maconochie and Sir Walter Crofton. Maconochie adopted good behavior marks to offer lessened sentences, became known as the "father of parole." Crofton adopted a system of four stages before a prisoner was able to re-enter the community.
