Description:

Materials: Ashlar masonry piers, brick in thick mortar beds, marble revetment, mosaics
Purpose: Orthodox Christian Church, to be the cathedral of Constantinople and the palace church of the Byzantine emperors. Converted to a mosque in 2020
Original dome fell after an earthquake, second taller dome added in 563. Minarets added after conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453.
Large interior space is created without visible supports by using spherical triangular pendentives
