Culture: Mauryan India
Patron: Ashoka the Great, plus 827 individual patrons of elements and carvings throughout
Materials: Baked brick and rubble smoothed over with plaster, with additions of stone facings and stone balustrades and toranas
Purpose: To commemorate the Buddha (contained some of his ashes)
Was remodeled several times including the addition of toranas with figural carving in the 2nd century CE
