Citizen Genet affair (apr 8, 1793 – jan 1, 1794)

Description:

Citizen Genet was the French minister to America from April of 1793 to 1794. When Washington passed the Proclamation of Neutrality, Citizen Genet protested by defying all diplomatic formalities by appealing directly to the people and trying to put pressure on the politicians indirectly. Washington requested France to recall the minister, which France did. However, Genet knew that he would most likely be executed if he came back to France, so he decided instead to become a US citizen.
This was significant as it was the first American diplomatic incident that wasn't with Britain.
