The Tokugawa shogunate also known as the Edo shogunate was the military government of Japan. Tokugawa Ieyasu's dynasty of shoguns presided over 250 years of peace and prosperity in Japan, including the rise of a new merchant class and increasing urbanization. They also closed off Japanese society to Western influences. EXTREME anti-foreign policies. Banned Christianity.
