Sto Spirito (1441-1481)
by Filippo Brunelleschi
@Florence (feb 25, 1441 – feb 18, 1481)
Description:
Considerably altered from Brunelleschi's original design.
Originally Brunelleschi planned a series of aisle bays around the West end of the church, each with a door opening into it from the facade.
Brunelleschi also originally planned that the semi-circular walls of the side chapels would be visible from the outside.
Now they are hidden behind a straight wall.
Brunelleschi was probably imitating part of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
Differences between San Lorenzo and Sto Spirito:
-Sto Spirito: arch carried directly on capital of column - more classical.
San Lorenzo: arch is carried entablature + more symmetrical.
