Hamidian Massacres (jan 1, 1894 – dec 31, 1896)

Description:

Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II began to worry of the revolutionaries that were fighting against second-class treatment for Armenians. In retaliation, he ordered the massacres to surpress any seperatist forces in the Ottoman Empire. The massacres also resulted in increased taxes and promoting a nationalistic resentment towards Armenians. Although this event is not considered part of the Armenian Genocide, it was a large contributor in changing Turkey's attitude towards them.
