Giovanni Sobieslaw di Moravia (jun 13, 1388 – oct 12, 1394)
Description:
Giovanni Sobieslaw was the third-born son of the Margrave of Moravia , Giovanni Enrico of Luxembourg , born from his second marriage with Margaret of Opava and therefore nephew of Charles IV .
In 1368 he was appointed provost of Vysehrad. Two years later, in 1370, he was ordained a deacon. Initiated to an ecclesiastical career, before being appointed Patriarch of Aquileia by Urban IV , he was canon of Visegrad ( 1368 ), bishop of Litomyšl from 1380 to 1387 (in this period, after a three-year dispute with the archbishop of Prague Jan z Jenštejna, will be excommunicated , however remaining in his post) and bishop of Olomouc from 1387 to 1388 (became bishop without the vote of the chapter or the approval of the pope thanks to the support of his cousinWenceslaus IV of Bohemia ).
Once he arrived in Friuli he had to manage a critical situation in which, due to the weakening of the power of the patriarch, the various noble families had acquired more and more autonomy and power, to counteract which Giovanni increased popular representation in parliament . The situation degenerated when the patriarch's marshal assassinated Federico Savorgnan in the church of Santo Stefano in Udine , causing a popular uprising supported by the Serenissima , which forced the patriarch to take refuge in the castle of Soffumbergo. As retaliation on 22 June 1392 near Venzone he was assassinated by Nicolò Savorgnan Agostino, bishop of Concordia. The patriarch was then lured to Udine with fake negotiations, only to be assassinated (12 October 1394 ) by Tristano Savorgnan (Federico's son) and secretly buried the same night in the Cathedral of Udine to avoid popular reactions.
