The Battle of Saratoga (October 1777) (sep 19, 1777 – oct 17, 1777)
Description:
Description:
In October, 1777, British forces under the command of Gereral John Burgoyne marched from Canada to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies. However, Burgoyne’s troops were attacked by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold’s American soldiers and the British were forced to surrender.
Significance:
Although France had clandestinely provided supplies and money to the colonies since 1775, it openly allied itself with the patriots after the Battle of Saratoga. This marked a massive shift in how the war needed to be fought as the borders were dramatically changed. Britain now needed to divert resources and manpower back to Europe and away from America.
