Medieval Scholasticism (jan 1, 878 – jan 1, 1300)

Description:

Scholasticism emerged during the Middle Ages as a new method of thinking, and therefore learning. Academics became heavily philosophy-based, and this resulted in the teaching and practice of medicine becoming more conceptually developmental than practice-based. Practicing medicine became separated from studying and developing it, consequently dissociating medical practice at the time from the academic concept and teaching of medicine in the process. The Medieval Period also saw a surge of religious influence on academics and philosophy, and a lot of medical practice was altered or supplemented with religious aspects.

Overall, there was a shift in priority towards thinking about medicine rather than practicing it. The heavy religious influence permeated medical practice and teaching as well, creating a unique era of "medical philosophers" rather than "healers".
