The history of anatomy and dissection is rooted in the original dissections of criminals in Alexandria, a frontier of medicine and culture alike. Access to the process of mummification and embalming allowed the concept of examining the corpse to become more practical. With the rise of Galen and galenism, the power of this observation became more clear. This new study of observation coincides with explorations of anatomy that revealed the similarities between monkeys and humans, through dissection. Galen’s approach to anatomy, stressing the importance of learning through one’s hands, was truly the birthplace of dissection as an integral part of medical study.
