Renaissance of Anatomy (jan 1, 1450 – jan 1, 1650)

Description:

It wasn’t until the Renaissance of Anatomy in 1450-1650 that the humanists chose to revive Galen and transform Greek science to denounce the Arabic influence on medicine. In this era, the rise of humanism brought a worship of Galen and serious study of anatomy not only as a method of medical study but also within art and culture. Vesalius’ “On the Fabric of the Human Body” in 1543 marked the beginning of the scientific revolution in anatomy and the reunification of hand and mind. Vesalius was a novel dissector, critiquing the explanations of Galen and exploring the female body and focusing his practice mostly on those convicted of murder, or from the lower socioeconomic class, and almost always, foreigners. The dissection was considered equivalent to an extension of the death penalty–saved only for the worst of criminals.
