NATO, short for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a mutual defence alliance that was created in 1949 after the Berlin blockade and still exists today. The alliance initially included 12 countries, the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway, Luxemburg, and Iceland.
