Berlin Airlift - Teresa (jun 24, 1948 – dec 20, 1948)

Description:

In efforts to help Germany recover, the US and UK combined their zones of territory in Berlin and created an independent German Republic. The USSR felt threatened that this move would prevent them from getting the post war reparations that they wanted from Germany. As a result, the USSR set up a blockade which stopped anything from coming into West Berlin in hopes that the US would give up West Germany. The US didn't surrender and instead President Truman used airlifts to bring in food and supplies into West Germany without starting a war. Eventually, the USSR gave in and ended the blockade. The Berlin Airlift set a precedence in the Cold War that showed the US was committed to containing communism and not submitting to Soviet commands.
