4th Crusade (jan 1, 1202 – apr 1, 1204)
Description:
Western Europeans sail east intending to conquer jerusalem. on the way they agree to assist Byzantine Prince Alexios Angelos in reinstating his deposed father as emperor in Constantinople, in return for support in the crusade. This they did, but slightly unfortunately provoked an assassination by members of the general populous. Without the promised support it would be difficult to take Jerusalem, so they decided to to have the Byzantine empire instead - and ransacked Constantinople. Resistance groups eventually retook the capitol 60 years later, but it was the end of the Byzantine era.
