Byzantine Empire (jan 1, 285 – jan 1, 1453)
Description:
Eastern Division of the Ancient Roman Empire. Its subjects continued to consider it the 'Roman Empire', or Romania, despite no longer containing Rome, revolving around constantinople, and speaking greek rather than latin.
It was eventually crippled in the 4th crusade when constantinople was sacked - it never regained its previous power, and gradually fell to the Ottomans
