McCarthyism is the era when many unsubstantiated accusations were made against people who were supposed communists. It started when President Truman signed an order that required all federal civil service employees to be screened for loyalty. It ended in the late 1950s when support burned out. This is significant to the Cold War because it showed the world, especially the Soviets, that the United States doesn't support communism at all and that we are hostile towards communists.Added to timeline:
