The 1920s: Europe and North America (dec 30, 1920 – nov 11, 1929)

Description:

The Roaring Twenties was a period of urbanization and consumerism, bringing upon social change and modernization, including the Jazz Age, women’s suffrage and social status, and a positive outlook on America’s future. During this time of economic growth, there was little unemployment, and consumerism soared – resulting in mass production, mass popular culture, and prosperity. In Europe during the “Golden Twenties”, there was a decline of the aristocracy and mass employment of the middle class was attributed to the government, which would continue to play a role in the economy for the years to come. This slightly right-wing shift not only occurred in the economy; society also strayed from traditional ideas as the “New Woman” emerged: a woman who drank, smoked, and exhibited “unladylike” behaviour – and although not all women were like this, they still gained the freedom of voting after the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and participating in the consumer economy.
