Pre World War Progressivism refers to the series of responses to economic and social problems that came with the industrialization of the United States. Americans looked up to the government to provide intervention in the society and economy, and although some citizens were opposed, the majority were reformers to end abuse of power, increase government support for public facilities, and called for workplace safety. This caused a shift towards economic left as worker issues were acknowledged and as the government had a slightly larger role in limiting large corporations, providing a foundation for modern liberalism. Progressivism has had a great impact to our world today in terms of social reform, fighting for women’s suffrage, workplace safety, public education, and unionization. Due to this, it exhibits historical significance, and although it did not directly affect the international community, progressive reforms were slowly introduced to other countries.
