Southwest Tour (jan 29, 1979 – mar 11, 1979)
Description:
In a six week tour through Kansas, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, and Missouri, RDT did not perform any company choreography, showing CONCERTO GROSSO, DEAD HEAT, DAY ON EARTH, and “OPUS” JAZZ LOVES BACH in Kansas, and ICARUS in place of DAY ON EARTH in Missouri. Robin Chemlar and Thom Scalise arrived in Kansas ahead of the company to promote the concert.
Through part of the tour, a nine-year-old child, Heather Turner of Salt Lake City traveled with the company to perform DAY ON EARTH. In Jackson, Tennessee, a child was selected from the community. The criteria for her selection was: able to learn a dance, look eight years old, be no taller than 4’3”, and fit into a princess-style costume. Two girls were selected, one as understudy, with two weeks for rehearsal. New company members of the tour were Kim Justeson, Steven P. Smith, and apprentice Bill Spenser.
