Eberhard (dec 31, 1045 – jan 1, 1048)

Description:

Eberhard (also: Eppo) was a canon in Augsburg ; the first bishop of Bamberg (1007-1040) and a bishop of Augsburg (1029-1047), who can be regarded as his relatives, bore the same name as him.

King Henry, later Emperor Henry III. , made the canon of Augsburg chancellor for Germany; as such he is proven from July 4, 1040 to November 8, 1042; but he was certainly a member of the court orchestra some time earlier. After two years as chancellor, Henry appointed him patriarch of Aquileia, succeeding Poppo , who died on September 28, 1042 . Eberhard, who as chancellor for Germany held an important position within the court orchestra and was one of Heinrich's closest associates, was probably close to the reformist ideas of the time.

Eberhard was invested as patriarch on February 1, 1043 . There is no news of him from the years that followed, save a reference to the consecration of one of his suffragan bishops , Marcianus of Mantua . 1046 Henry III. on his first expedition to Italy in Pavia from a synod, as a participant Eberhard is testified; she enacted a general ban on simony . From Pavia the king went on to Rome via Sutri ; Eberhard accompanied him there, as did the bishop of Arles and probably numerous other participants in the synod. The Synod of Sutri (December 20, 1046) installed the popes Sylvester III.and Gregory VI. from, that of Rome (December 24) also Pope Benedict IX. The bishop of Bamberg Suidger, also a court chaplain, was raised to the new pope, Clement II ; he crowned Henry III. on December 25 in Rome to the Emperor. So Eberhard was present at all these events. On January 5, 1047, the new pope held a synod against simony in Rome; In the course of this, the old controversy revived as to which of the highest-ranking archbishops in northern Italy, Milan or Ravenna, to take the place of honor on the Pope's right. Now the Patriarch of Aquileia, Eberhard, also claimed this place and thus priority over all the churches in Italy. However, in 1047 the pope and synod ruled in favor of the Archbishop of Ravenna . In April 1047 Emperor Henry stopped in Ravenna on his way north from Rome. There, too, the Patriarch of Aquileia meets again in his surroundings; he had therefore most likely accompanied Heinrich on his entire Italian expedition from October 1046 (Pavia) to April 1047 (Ravenna).

Eberhard died at the end of the year 1048 (not 1049, as is often stated), on November 13th. His successor to the patriarchal chair, Gotebold , was installed at Christmas 1048.
