Summerdance (jun 15, 1978 – jul 15, 1978)
Description:
The 1978 Summer Workshop hosted Douglas Dunn (master classes), Rebecca Bobele (jazz technique), and Ze’eva Cohen (composition and improvisation) as guest artists. The workshop was smaller than usual, with one hundred students, and lasted for five weeks. The Summerdance concert series began with an RDT concert, then one by Ze’eva Cohen, then RDT performing the premiere of RELIEF by Dunn, FOR BETTY, and JUKEBOX ; and finally two concerts performed by workshop students including the choreography of Rebecca Bobele and Carolyn Wood.
RELIEF was Dunn’s first attempt at doing a shorter piece to be performed with other works, rather than a full evening’s dance. “I wanted to do a twenty-minute piece for eight or nine people that wouldn’t bore me time after time. I am interested in being interested in my work. If it isn’t interesting, I am not going to take a job.”
