Vietnam War: End of the Conflict (mar 1, 1973 – mar 1, 1978)

Description:

Paris Peace Treaties
-----------------------------
Following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords on January 27, 1973, the remaining American personnel were evacuated. The terms of the accords called for a total cease-fire in South Vietnam, allowed North Vietnamese forces to maintain the territory they had conquered, released US prisoners of war, and pushed both sides to find a political solution to the conflict. The Saigon government and the Vietcong collaborated to create an agreement that would result in free and democratic elections in South Vietnam. As an enticement, Nixon offered Thieu US airpower to implement the peace terms.

Standing Alone, South Vietnam Falls
----------------------------------------------------
With the withdrawal of US soldiers from Vietnam, South Vietnam was left alone. The Paris Peace Accords were in place, but fighting continued, and Thieu publicly proclaimed in January 1974 that the pact was no longer in effect. The following year saw the fall of Richard Nixon and the cessation of military supplies to Saigon.

On April 30, 1975, the North Vietnamese captured Saigon. President Ford directed that all American personnel and embassy workers be evacuated. In the weeks and days leading up to the city's fall, operations such as Babylift, New Life, and Frequent Wind evacuated refugees from Saigon.
