Battle of Dollard's Tavern (Red House, Black Mingo Swamp) (sep 28, 1780 – sep 29, 1780)
Description:
Col. Francis Marion’s Patriots surprised Loyalist militia camped at Shepherds Ferry near Dollard's "Red House" Tavern. Col Banastre Tarleton left a contingent of Loyalist under the command of Col. John Coming Ball to secure the area after his destructive march through the area. An attempt to surprise the Loyalist but they had moved from the house to an adjacent field. After a short sharply contested battle on both sides, the Loyalist withdrew into the Black Mingo Swamp with a one third loss of killed and wounded on both sides. Col. Marion took possession of Col. Ball's horse which he renamed Ball and rode him throughout the remainder of the war.
