Skirmish and houses burned on Hilton Head Island (jan 28, 1779 – jan 30, 1779)
Description:
British Gen Augustine Pre'vost wanted to subdue the interior of Georgia. As a diversion to hide his intent, Pre'vost sent Maj Valentine Gardiner with a flotilla of shallow water boats, HMS Vigilant (troop transport) and 200 regulars to sail up into the Broad River and attack Port Royal Island. On Hilton Head Island, Patriots were chased away from their positions and the British burned at least two house possibly more. As the flotilla moved, British Privateers looted and destroyed many homes on Hilton Head Island and Pickney Island during the two days of movement through Skull Creek toward Port Royal.
