Battle of Round Mountain (Warrior Mountain, Battle of Howard Gap) (jun 1, 1776 – jun 30, 1776)

Description:

South Carolina Capt. Edward Hampton and his brother, Capt. Preston Hampton were sent on a mission of peace with the Cherokee nation. Instead of being welcomed they were captured but escaped. The Cherokee came to his house recognized, killed Hampton, his father, wife and one child. Capt. Howard lead a local militia to the Cherokee village and in the battle killed most of the Cherokee. Corrdinates of historical marker in Columbus, NC. Round Mountain northwest of marker.
