Gillo da Villalta (feb 16, 1315 – dec 30, 1316)
Description:
Illegitimate son of the noble Villalta family , despite his origin he had great credit in the Friuli of that time. As archdeacon of Aquileia he appears for the first time in a document dated May 28, 1293 , at the time of the patriarch Raimondo della Torre .
On 2 September of the same year Gillo was appointed as intermediary to resolve the disputes between the patriarch and Tolberto and Biaquino da Camino dei Caminesi di Sotto: on 10 March 1294 he was present in Padua with the same patriarch to settle this controversy. On April 8, 1299 , on the death of Patriarch Raimondo, Gillo was elected vicomino of the church of Aquileia [1] , an appointment confirmed on the death of Patriarch Pietro Gerra on February 24, 1301 . During the period of vacant patriarchal see following the death of the patriarch, the Count of Ortenburg and Enrico Count of Gorizia fought to conquer the role of captain general of the Patriarchate.; Gillo supported the latter alongside Gherardo da Camino. From that moment (July 5, 1301 ) the archdeacon will always appear as linked to the Caminesi and involved in their affairs.
On the death of the patriarch Ottobuono , which occurred in January 1315 , the Aquileian Chapter elected Gillo da Villalta as patriarch (February 16, 1315 ) however, being of illegitimate birth, he needed a papal dispensation, to obtain which he set out on a journey to Avignon . The pontifical see, however, was vacant at that moment and every decision was suspended [2] ; elected Giovanni XXII , he appointed Cassono della Torre patriarch , former archbishop of Milan .
