Basilides? | Valentinus? (jan 1, 120 – dec 31, 139)

Description:

The dates for Valentinus and Basilides' activity are hard to pin down. Justin Martyr is the earliest writer to mention them, but he seems to draw a distinction between these two figures (whose followers have inherited their name), and Marcion, who is said to be alive in Justin's time. The implication here is that both Valentinus and Basilides may be dead by Justin's time, having lived in an earlier period than later proto-orthodox writers would have it. Such writers had a vested interest in pushing the origin and activity of "heterodox" Christian sects as late as possible.
