Paul writes (jan 1, 50 – dec 31, 59)
Description:
Paul composes the seven authentic letters attributed to him (1 Thessalonians, Philippians, Galatians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Philemon)
The general content of Paul’s letters attests that by some twenty years after the Jesus cult’s founding, Jesus clubs are being seeded by multiple different (competing) sects across the eastern Mediterranean. The club(s) at Rome seem particularly influential; demographically, it may have been heavier on Jewish adherents than Paul’s own clubs, but of a Hellenized mindset less apt to rigorously hold to Mosaic law.
Paul plants additional Jesus clubs in Thessalonica, Corinth, and Cenchreae, possibly working at the very frontier of the movement at that time. He has a variety of subordinates and works with another apostle named Apollos. He's in Ephesus for at time and attests Jesus clubs "in Asia". He continues writing his clubs and receiving material support from them. The club at Galatia turns against him in favor of a Judaizing sect. Paul is similarly challenged in Corinth; furious letters and in-person visits result, with the club eventually repairing its relationship to Paul. He preaches in Illyricum at some point.
There are multiple indicators that despite having proselytized in the city Ephesus, Paul was routed there (and in the province of Asia more generally) by the Judaizing wing of the Jesus cult. He may have encountered some sort of insuperable difficulty in the province of Bithynia as well.
Paul writes to a Jesus club in Rome, hoping to clear his name of various slanders, clarify his doctrine, and shore up monetary support in order to take his work to Spain. He is eventually imprisoned (seemingly in Rome?), Paul corresponds with the Jesus club at Philippi and with a slave owner named Philemon.
