Magellan expedition (jan 1, 1519 – jan 1, 1522)

Description:

In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain with five tiny ships in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, and he was partially successful. He traveled all the way to the tip of South America, rounded it, and headed home, but he ended up being slain in the Philippines by natives. All told, only one out of the original five made it back to Spain, effectively completing the first circumnavigation of the globe. This expedition is another example of Spanish mindset at the time, which led to further encroachment on Indian territory in the Americas.
