Hammerlsey "Venture" plate (jan 1, 1859 – jan 1, 1905)

Description:

This pearlware plate was produced by Staffordshire potter Ralph Hammersley & Son. The black transfer print design is called "Venture," as shown in a cartouche with "RH" on the back of the plate.

Romantic style pottery was at its peak between 1831 and 1851. According to Jefferson Patterson, all patterns share three elements- a highly stylized building in the background more fantastical than of architectural realism, a lake or river in the mid-ground, and small human figures.

Romanticism was an escape from the heavy industrialism of the nineteenth century. Whether due to the influence of wealthy families whom the women worked for or a desire to contrast the heavy labor Michael performed as a sawyer and construction worker, the Welches appear to have favored romantic wares over popular Chinese motifs or pastorals.
