The Reservation Policy (jan 1, 1871 – jan 1, 1887)

Description:

The government established reservations as part of the treaties with Native Americans. After 1871, the government pursued a more aggressive policy of assimilation, encouraged by thee idea of Manifest Destiny: the belief it was Americans God-given right to settle the rest of the continent and the land in the west was seen as representing Americans freedom at the start of the period and into the twentieth century.

Some Native Americans such as the Sioux, resisted this policy e.b. Battle of Little Bighorn - government reduced the size of reservatkions without regard for earlier treaties - battle led to different approach from the governemnt, with the inbtroduction of the allotment policy.
