Escambray Rebellion (jan 3, 1959 – jan 1, 1965)
Description:
-also called "War Against the Bandits"
-continued fighting in Escambray mountains - some anti-Batista forces returned to hideouts there to fight Castro's forces
-guerrilla campaign - similar to Castro's Sierra Maestra campaign
-soldiers still loyal to Batista: members of DRE (anti-communist + anti-Batista student group), joined by disaffected rebels + Batista loyalists
-rebels given same military aid (via CIA + Mafia) as Batista regime had received in Cuban Revolution (but cut off after Bay of Pigs invasion)
-total destruction of rebel forces in January 1965 (outnumbered by Castro's forces)
-other (less direct) forms of resistance during this period: rebels denounced as traitors + arrested
