-causes: desire for pro-US leaders in Latin America for US security, & pressure from United Fruit Company (+ other corporations) due to lost profits (due to new labour laws + land reform in Guatemala)

-democratically elected + highly popular Árbenz removed from power

-caused 30-year civil war

-Alan Dulles (director of CIA) + John Foster Dulles (Secretary of State) thought to have been main forces behind the coup (due to business interests)

-this, & similar US acts of aggression in Latin America, led to fear of a similar coup in Cuba
