World War Two (sep 3, 1939 – sep 2, 1945)

Description:

Many Germans were angry about the money Germany had to pay due to the Treaty of Versailles and the Wall Street Crash. The Nazi Party had risen to power, led by Adolf Hitler. This global war was characterised by the Holocaust, the atomic bombing of Japan and 3% of the world's population dead. The brutality of the war led to a change in public attitude; people no longer wanted the death penalty.

During World War Two, conscientious objectors (COs) were treated less harshly by the government, because many politicians were sympathetic.

In WWII, COs:
- were only imprisoned as a last resort
- could work on farms or in factories to help the war effort
- were still hated by much of the public (they were spat at, beaten up or sacked from their jobs)
