Transportation to America (jan 1, 1680 – apr 19, 1775)
Description:
Transportation of criminals to Britain's American colonies helped the British Empire grow, until it ended with the start of the American War of Independence.
Transportation was needed as a punishment because:
- juries were often unwilling to convict if the punishment would be death under the Bloody Code
- it would remove the criminal from society
- it was a deterrent to other criminals, because America was so far away that you would likely never see your family again
- it would reform criminals by giving them a new life of work abroad
