RICHARD I (The Lionheart) (feb 1, 1189 – jan 1, 1199)
Description:
Third son of Henry II.
- He wanted his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, to rule while he went on crusades.
- Spent most of his reign abroad.
- Used the taxes from his kingdom to fund his various armies and military ventures.
- 1192: On his way back from leading a crusade in Palestine to recover Jerusalem from Saladin, he was captured and held for ransom, which almost bankrupt the country.
- 1199: died
