Description:
Grandson of William I.- The Council considered a woman (Matilda) unfit to rule and so offered the throne to Stephen.
- 1139: Matilda invaded from Anjou. Under the terms of the Treaty of Westminster Matilda’s son Henry Plantagenet would succeed to the throne when Stephen died.
