HENRY I (feb 1, 1100 – jan 1, 1135)
Description:
Fourth and youngest son of William I. First elected ruler of England.
- 1100: Issued a charter promising he would not overtax the Church or the tenants in chief.
- 1106: He invaded Normandy and imprisoned his brother Robert. This invasion changed the status of the Crown: during William's rule, England was owned by Normandy; now it was the other way around.
- He moved his court from Normandy to England constantly. Roger, bishop of Salisbury, was in charge while he was away: government by a system.
- He colonized Wales and had a good relationship with Scotland.
- He made his daughter Matilda, married to Geoffrey Plantagenet, his successor.
