WILLIAM I (The Conqueror) (oct 14, 1066 – jan 1, 1087)

Description:

Duke of Normandy.
- Claimed that his second cousin Edward the Confessor had promised him the throne.
- Defeated Harold II at the Battle of Hastings on 14th October 1066.
- William's victory cut off England's links with Scandinavia, bringing the country instead into close contact with the Continent, especially France. Thus, with the Norman conquest, England's bonds with Europe and the Latin civilization were reestablished and strengthened.
