Navigation Acts (jan 1, 1651 – jan 1, 1663)
Description:
The Navigation Acts were laws, unpopular among the colonists, restricting colonial trade so as to benefit Britain. They stated that goods like tobacco and sugar had to be transported in English ships and sold first in English ports, and also specified that goods imported to the colonies had to be shipped through England with custom duties.
Connection to mercantilism: belief that government should regular the economy so as to promote national power. Here, America's imports and exports were used to support Britain's economy and power.
