- Opposition against immigration
- Secret antiforeign society - Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner
- Became political party. Know Nothing.
- Supported longer time required for citizenship.
- Supported only native born citizens holding public office.
- Gained strength in early 1850s when Whig Party disintegrated, Mid Atlantic and New England states.
