Coast Salish Cultures (autonomous) (jan 1, 600 – jan 1, 1885)
Description:
A loose collective of polities (though lacking formal political organizations or conventions of standing militaristic power) in a densely indigenously populated region spanning from British Columbia to northern Oregon. The grouping of Coast Salish nations is characterized by a tradition of patrilineal descent, distinct from the majority of western North American matrilineal cultures, hierarchical social structures and emphasis on property ownership, and engagement in extensive maritime trade.
