South Carolina demanded the withdrawal of Union federal troops in Fort Sumter but they refused. A canon fire from the rebelling state's military hit the fort, marking the start of the Civil War.
The Civil War would be known as the most deadliest war in American history (620,000 U.S. deaths) while World War II would be second (291,557 U.S. deaths)
