Description:
Freedom Summer was an attempt to increase voter registration among African Americans in Mississippi. Many volunteers were killed, falsely arrested, or beaten. The KKK had support from local law enforcement in many places. Out of the 17,000 African Americans that attempted to register to vote only 1,200 succeeded.Added to timeline:
