American Revolutionary War (apr 1, 1775 – oct 1, 1783)
Description:
- British entered the war with far greater resources
- More population, wealthy economy, well-trained army, strongest navy in the world, battle experiences in the Americas
- Patriots lacked resources but they had the committement to independence (mostly from New England and Virginia)
- African Americans also joined the army with the offer of freedom (Washington was reluctant to let African Americans to join but changed his mind after the British offered freedom to African Americans if they join their sides)
- Tories were loyalists who supported the British, tended to be more wealthy and conservative, left the colonies after the war
- American Indians supported the British because colonists attacked on their settlements
